Dr. Refaat has six American board certifications in Internal Medicine, Cardiovascular Disease, Echocardiography, Nuclear Cardiology, Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology, and Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is a clinician, researcher and educator. He is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Cardiovascular Electrophysiology (JCE), Associate Editorial Team Lead of ACC.org Arrhythmias and Clinical EP and a F1000Prime Faculty Member. Dr. Refaat serves on the editorial board for the Journal of the American College of Cardiology (JACC) and is a member of the JACC: Heart Failure International Advisory Board. He was an Associate Editor of Pacing and Clinical Electrophysiology (PACE) in 2018 and 2019. Dr. Refaat was the National Ambassador of Lebanon at European Heart Rhythm Association and was the Chairman of the Lebanese Society of Cardiology Electrophysiology Working Group. Dr. Refaat has more than 160 publications in peer-reviewed journals and his cardiovascular research work has been funded by many intramural and extramural grants. Dr. Refaat is a grant reviewer of many European Union countries and was a top reviewer for the Journal of the American Heart Association. Dr. Refaat has received many local and international awards including the International College Distinguished Scholar Award, Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society membership, Penrose Award (American University of Beirut’s highest scholastic honor), Research Awards (from the American College of Physicians, Massachusetts Medical Society, American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology), Massachusetts General Hospital Housestaff Clinical Research Award, University of Pittsburgh Department of Medicine Best Research Award (for 2 consecutive years), University of Pittsburgh’s Ziady Memorial Award for Outstanding Achievement in the Care of the Cardiac Patient, Massachusetts Institute of Technology ASO Science and Technology Young Professional Achievement Award, Heart Rhythm Society Young Investigator Award Finalist, American Heart Association Paul Dudley White International Scholar Award, Heart Rhythm Society Kenneth Rosen Fellowship Award in Cardiac Pacing & Electrophysiology and the Abdul Hameed Shoman Arab Researchers Award. Dr. Refaat has mentored many postdoctoral fellows, medical students and graduate students at the American University of Beirut Faculty of Medicine. In addition, many of Dr. Refaat's trainees have been accepted for professional development at top institutions and received research awards/grants while working under his supervision.
