Tamar Kabakian

Public Health

Dr. Tamar Kabakian-Khasholian is an Associate Professor at the Department of Health Promotion and Community Health, Faculty of Health Sciences, at the American University of Beirut. Dr. Kabakian-Khasholian’s research focuses on maternal and reproductive health. Her main interest is in finding ways to improve women’s experiences with maternity care and their wellbeing. She therefore focuses her research on exploring women’s experiences in childbirth and with caesarean sections, on postpartum wellbeing and on implementing interventions that aim to improve quality of care and enhance a positive childbirth experience. Her research approach is intervention oriented across countries and contexts in the Arab world and adopts both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies. She has conducted a number of intervention and implementation research studies aiming at improving the quality of maternity care and maternal and neonatal outcomes, including a multi-site implementation research on introducing labor companionship in public hospitals in Arab countries. She also works on pregnancy and childbirth needs of internally displaced populations and refugees in Lebanon. Dr. Kabakian-Khasholian teaches implementation research, maternal health, health communication, and research design among other courses in the MPH program at the Faculty of Health Sciences since 2002.
