Marlene Chakhtoura

Dr Chakhtoura obtained her medical degree from the Lebanese University in 2008. She subsequently joined the American University of Beirut– Medical Center to complete 3 years of training in Internal Medicine. She then completed 2 years of training in Endocrinology and Metabolism, and graduated in 2013. She was enrolled in a three-year research fellowship at the Calcium Metabolism and Osteoporosis Program. Concomitantly, she completed the requirements of the SHARP Master of Sciences degree in Health Research in November 2015. She has also completed obesrvership in US medical weight management centers (The Comprehensive Weight Control Center (CWCC) - Weil Cornell Medicine, New York, and the Program for Weight Management - Brigham and Women's Hospital, Boston). In 2016, Dr Chakhtoura was appointed at AUB-MC, as Instructor in Clinical Medicine, and was promoted to Assistant Professor Rank in 2019. In 2016, Dr Chakhtoura was appointed as assistant director of SHARP summer certificate, and as a co-instructor in Epidemiology courses. During her research fellowship, Dr Chakhtoura has focused on osteoporosis and other bone and mineral disorders. She spearheaded the finalization of the executive version of the 2013 Lebanese FRAX-Based Osteoporosis Guidelines. She was lead author on several systematic reviews/meta-analyses on vitamin D requirements in various groups. Currently, Dr Chakhtoura is leading several projects related to mineral metabolism and osteoporosis. She has also interest in medical weight management and conducting studies and systematic reviews on medical weight management and the link between weight loss and bone health.
