The University Support for Integrated Solid Waste Management

Project description

As a result of the Guide to Municipal Solid Waste Management produced by AUB-NCC in 2015, six municipalities in the Chahar region approached AUB-NCC for further assistance in developing an improved plan for solid waste management.

These include the villages of Aabey - Ain Drafeel, Aaramoun, Baawerta, Basateen, Binay, and Kfarmeta.

These communities are located around the Naameh Landfill, which operated for 18 years and was closed in May 2016 at around 800% of its designed carrying capacity for solid waste. The municipalities were severely hit by the waste crisis due to their proximity to the Landfill, and have made claims of intolerable odors, rashes, infections, increased incidence of respiratory problems, severe reactions to increased mosquitoes bites, high occurrence of cancer, and contaminated water and air.

Using a public participatory approach, the project activities include establishing longstanding and representative citizen committees to help build capacity in the community, co-facilitating waste sorting and reduction campaigns, developing maps on environmental and community assets, conducting a baseline assessment and damage assessments (atmospheric, water, and human health), establishing an inter-municipal committee, and creating a model of ISWM strategic plan.

Salma Talhouk Female American University of Beirut Lebanon

Bio: Dr. Salma Talhouk is an Associate Professor of Horticulture at the Department of Plant Sciences.
My primary interest is the conservation of the native Lebanese flora. Located on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, Lebanon falls in a recognized center of diversity, with 50% of all plant species found endemic to Lebanon. I am attempting to adapt and develop various methodologies, establish collaborations , and follow various venues with the aim of generating information and knowledge that can be readily implemented by the private and/or public sectors in Lebanon and the region. I have also incorporated my research findings in my teaching and services to the community in an attempt to widen the impact of my contribution in this field.
