Integrated development of the mountains of North Lebanon

Project description

On December 10, 2001, FAFS submitted the final report for a study of Rural Integrated Development of Northern Lebanon Mountains to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in Rome. The cost of the study (TCP/LEB/0065) was covered by FAO and the Ministry of Agriculture and was conducted by a team of AUB professors in cooperation with FAO consultants. The study was conducted in February-December, 2001.

The project was carried out in cooperation with three FAO consultants: Mr. B. Khatib, National Soil Surveyor; Dr. C. Mourad, Socio-Economist from Lebanese University; and Dr. W. Verheye, Land Use Planning Specialist and Professor at Ghent University. Four professors at FAFS also participated (Dr. Youssef Abou-Jawdah, Isam Bashour, Musa Nimah and Antoine Sayegh, the team leader.)

In the study, data was collected from a pilot project (9330 ha of agricultural land) in the Zgharta-Ehden region. Information was included on agro-climate, soils and land forms, in addition to specific studies and recommendations on irrigation, fertilization. plant protection and pest and disease control. A detailed soil map scale 1/2000 was also prepared for the region.
