B.A. in English Literature (1956) and M.A. in Education (1958), both from the American University of Beirut (AUB); Ph.D. in Comparative Education (1964), from the University of Chicago. Title of dissertation: "The Role of Two Western Universities (The American University of Beirut and the St. Joseph University) in the National Life of Lebanon and the Middle East". V. DEVELOPMENT ACTIVITIES, CONSULTATIONS AND RELATED MATTERS
A. Consultation Work:
1. Two weeks study and consultation trip to Bahrain for evaluating educational conditions in Bahrain and recommending reform measures, Spring 1968.
2. Ten-day trip as part of a mission to Iraq to investigate University conditions, 1969.
3. Two trips to Saudi Arabia, five days each, upon the invitation of Saudi Ministry of Education, to advise on revising social studies curriculum, Spring 1978. Reports and recommendations were submitted to the Ministry on the subject; these were taken as a framework for the activities of a Saudi national committee formed later and charged with revising social studies curriculum.
4. As director of Al-Ittihad School Project in Dubai (1977-1980), made ten trips to Dubai to assist in establishing the School and set its procedures and curricula. A number of reports were written relevant to this task, some of which ran close to 100 pages.
5. Undertook a consultation trip to Bakht-er-Ruda, Sudan together with Professor Murad Jurdak, February 17-25, 1980, at the invitation of the ALESCO; the purpose was to advise on setting up a national research center at Bakht-er-Ruda. The mission culminated in a 35 pages report submitted to ALESCO.
6. Contributed one week of lectures and discussions to a training program for teachers of commercial subjects in Bahrain, on the subject of "Education and Social Change", 1983 (same week repeated Oct. 20-27, 1984 to a different group).
7. Appointed as a UNICEF consultant on a three year project in the People's Democratic Republic of Yemen (PDRY) on enhancement of girls' education in the rural parts of the country. Activities involved five trips over the three year period:
First trip: Sept. 19 - Oct. 11, 1984 - contacts and explorations with Ministry officials at two Moohafazats outside capital (Lahj and Mahara); trip culminated in a 61 page report including findings and setting priorities for action.
Second trip: Jan. 31 - Feb. 2, 1985 - working out a research and intervention plan with staff of the National Research Center for Education, Aden.
Third trip: Sept. 20 - Oct. 3, 1985 - on site field work in three villages in Lahj collecting information and conducting interviews.
Fourth trip: June 28 - July 10, 1986 - sorting out data from previous trip and going over first conclusions and draft report.
Fifth trip: April 18 - 29, 1987 - revising final report and submitting recommendations and an action plan to Ministry of Education and UNICEF. (Final report was published in 288 pages).
8. Consultant for the Center for Language and Education Research, Beirut, and headed a team in charge of advising Lebanese Ministry of Education on setting up a unit for Educational Planning in the Ministry, at the request of the National Board of Reconstruction and Development, Beirut, Lebanon, 1987.
9. Member of an A.U.B. team to advise the government of Bahrain on the merger of two colleges into the newly formed University of Bahrain, 1987.
10. Member of a consultation team to advise ALECSO, Tunis, on its biannual programs in Education, March 18-21, 1991.
11. Member of a team invited by the Ministry of Education, Lebanon, for a three days conference to draft educational goals and objectives for Lebanese Curricula. Beirut, April 18-20, 1991.
12. Member of the Higher Committee for Planning and Follow up on Lebanese Curriculum Revision and Reconstruction Programs, Center for Educational Research and Development, Lebanese Ministry of Education, April 1995 - 1999.
13. Head of a UNESCO team to Doha, Qatar, to advise the Ministry of Education on revising General Secondary Education in Qatar, October 3-11, 1997.
B. OTHER ACTIVITIES AND REMARKS:
1. As coordinator of AUB Summer Colloquia on Higher Education in the Middle East during 1978, 1979 and 1980, organized various aspects relevant to the work of these colloquia and gave lectures not listed above.
2. Appointed as member on the Advisory Council for Education Research Department, ALECSO (Arab League Education, Culture and Science Organization), Tunis, since 1979.
3. Appointed on the editorial boards of the two educational journals issued by the ALECSO; 1) Arab Journal of Educational Research, and Arab Journal For Education since 1979.
4. Conference Coordinator on "Education and National Integration in Lebanon", AUB 1992. (On the 125 Anniversary of AUB).
5. Participated in Seminar called for by the Economic Development Institute World Bank, on Higher Education in the Arab World, Amman, April 17-21, 1993.
6. Member of Committee of Experts in a meeting in Amman, Sept. 5-8, 1993 to delineate an Executive plan for the UNESCO - ALECSO on Eradication of Illiteracy in the Arab World, and also to review the working document for the 5th conference of Arab Ministers of Education to take place in Cairo in June 1994.
7. Convener of curriculum track in the Kingdom Schools Project, Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, under the REP, AUB, 1999 – 2000. Six reports (total pages 1122) were produced and a training workshop for senior Schools’ personnel (July 24-28, 2000) was held under direction as Convener.
